Holiday Conversations

Ahhh…the holiday conversations.

“I know you probably think it’s bad in your line of work, but I started xyz medication.” (Hint: the injectable medication is making headlines daily for its use to treat obesity.)

Yes, I was a little taken aback. No, that’s not what I think.

First, as a Board Certified Health Coach, we are trained to help our clients be curious, discover, manifest, and celebrate their health and wellness goals – NEVER to dictate, prescribe, or pass judgment.

It’s the beauty of believing that the client ultimately has the answers within them, and our work is to help them get from where they are to where they want to be.

Having worked in health and wellness for decades, the advancements in understanding weight loss and management have progressed.

The formula for weight loss, expending more calories than consumed, is WAY more nuanced than the simple subtraction of numbers.

For example, the science on hunger hormones, such as ghrelin and leptin, helps us understand the complexity.

Not only do I listen deeply to my clients, but I also bring a symbolic toolbox to the table that may help the clients in their journey.

Information and tools for mindful eating, portion sizes, exercise, stress management, self-care, sleep hygiene, etc., AND validated goal-setting research to help manifest greater wellness. Still, healthy weight loss and maintenance are challenging.

When that person thought that I would judge their decision to take medication in our holiday conversation, it also brought clarity to my position on semaglutides. It’s been a hot topic that I’ve featured in our online discussions and resources.

While semaglutides are not a tool I can pull from my symbolic toolbox since I’m not a physician, I respect a person’s exploration of all aspects and make an educated decision on what is best for them.

In conjunction with all the other healthy-body, happy-mind tools I work withsemaglutides may be a game-changing medication for those who struggle with achieving and maintaining their healthy weight.
